Summary Writing for SPM

TIPS!!

1.     Avoid reading the whole passage to save time.

2.   Attempt the task directly:

•     Identify the stipulated are ( from line…….to line…..)
•     Box the area
•     Copy the task at the top of the passage
•     Go through every sentences within the stipulated area by constantly referring the task

3.   Underline the sentences that are related to the task.

4.   Count the number of words underlined.

5.   Edit by removing the examples, details, elaboration and repetition of ideas.

6.   If the number of words exceed the required number of words (130 words):

    Recount the number of words.

    Copy the underlined words and join sentences (when necessary) using linkers or conjunctions.

    Write the final draft

7.    Better candidates could rephrase some phrase but do not change the original meaning of the passage.

Content                     10 marks ( 1 mark for each point )

Paraphrase      }           5 marks

Use of English } 

Total                          15 marks

• Pick to 10-12 content points
